Apple frequently holds more liquid cash on hand than the actual operating balance of the United States Treasury. During the summer of 2011, the tech behemoth reported a cash reserve of 76 billion dollars, while the federal government was scraping by with an operating balance of around 73 billion dollars due to debt ceiling gridlock. This terrifying fiscal reality means that a company primarily known for selling overpriced rectangles with easily shattered screens is occasionally more solvent than the global military superpower that invented the internet.
