A closer look
South Africa introduced the Krugerrand in 1967 as the first gold bullion coin designed entirely for private individuals to hoard wealth, making it wildly popular among paranoid investors worldwide. By the late 1970s, Krugerrands accounted for over ninety percent of the entire global gold coin market, despite massive international sanctions against South Africa's brutal apartheid regime. Western governments literally banned the importation of the coin, but gold-obsessed doomsday preppers simply smuggled them in anyway because ignoring human rights violations is apparently a core tenant of sound financial planning. The coin does not even have a face value stamped on it, relying entirely on the daily spot price of gold to determine its worth. It perfectly highlights how the global financial market is perfectly willing to overlook institutionalized racism as long as the metal is shiny enough and fits nicely in a hidden floor safe
