A closer look
Sometimes national treasuries just get bored and want to assert sheer dominance. In 2011, the Perth Mint in Australia poured an absurdly massive coin out of 99.99% pure gold. It weighs exactly one metric tonne, is nearly a meter wide, and features a kangaroo. While its legal face value is technically $1 million Australian dollars, the raw gold value is closer to $50 million. It completely destroyed the previous record held by Canada, proving that global economics occasionally devolves into literal gold-measuring contests.
