Because editors back in the 19th century were apparently too terrified to suggest a period. Victor Hugo famously penned a massive 823-word sentence in his classic novel, describing a highly detailed and incredibly exhausting sequence. It remains one of the longest sentences ever published in literature, proving that brevity was definitely not Hugo's strong suit.
