North is on top of maps for a surprisingly human reason
HERE’S THE INTERESTING PART
There is absolutely no cosmic reason why north gets to sit at the top of our maps. The universe lacks a ceiling, yet European cartographers standardized north-up orientation simply because it placed their own countries in the prominent upper half of the page. Early Egyptian maps put south at the top, and medieval Christian maps favored east. North only won because the people drawing the grids had massive egos.
