Turning a Swing Into a Clock Reading
In this practice, a clock face becomes a menu of possible times. The pendulum is held over it, and the person watches for a direction or pattern of movement they treat as an answer. The motion may look like it comes from the object itself, but even a slight, unconscious movement of the hand can set the pendulum swinging. That effect is known as the ideomotor effect: expectations can shape small movements without the person deliberately making them.
Why the Guess Can Matter

A time is not just a biographical detail in that system: it affects chart features such as the rising sign and the divisions astrologers call houses. A pendulum reading can therefore supply a usable time where a record is absent, but it cannot recover documentary evidence. The chart that follows reflects the chosen time—and a different guess may produce a different chart.
