Sony created the PlayStation only because Nintendo spectacularly betrayed them at the Consumer Electronics Show in 1991. Sony had spent years developing a CD-ROM add-on for the Super Nintendo, but the day after Sony announced their partnership, Nintendo publicly humiliated them by announcing they were ditching them for Philips instead. Fueled by pure, unadulterated spite, Sony executive Ken Kutaragi pushed his company to release their own standalone console, completely dominating the market, bankrupting their rivals' market share, and proving that petty corporate revenge is apparently the greatest catalyst for technological innovation we have ever seen
