Base year indexing anchors reality to an arbitrary past
To figure out if things are getting more expensive, economists basically pick a random year in the past and pretend it was perfectly normal. Base year indexing sets a historical point at a clean value of 100, forcing all current economic data to be measured against that single frozen moment in time. It is a mathematical nostalgia trip.
