She specifically designed the mechanics to be incredibly frustrating in order to demonstrate the vicious, soul-crushing evils of capitalist monopolies and land grabs. The entire point was to show how enriching wealthy landlords inevitably bankrupts the working class and ruins friendships. Ironically, a man named Charles Darrow later stole her entire concept, sold it to a massive corporation, and became a millionaire, completely subverting the anti-capitalist message. Now millions of families willingly gather around the table every Thanksgiving to gleefully financially ruin their own children and experience the sociopathic thrill of unfettered rent-seeking behavior
