HERE’S THE INTERESTING PART

Long before the Federal Reserve existed, a cartel of wealthy Boston bankers set up the Suffolk Banking System to ruthlessly kneecap their rural competitors. They systematically hoarded country bank notes and threatened to redeem them all for gold at once if the smaller banks didn't keep interest-free deposits in Boston. It was basically an organized protection racket masked as early financial regulation.
