Before the multi-million dollar swag bags and the $50,000 dresses, the Oscars were just a cheap dinner party. The first ceremony in 1929 was a private dinner at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. Only 270 people attended, the winners were announced three months in advance to zero suspense, and a ticket cost five bucks. Frankly, that's still more than some of the winning movies were worth.
