The role Jackson wanted
Michael Jackson’s reported interest in buying Marvel Comics was driven by a personal ambition: he wanted to play Spider-Man. The plan was not simply to own a famous publishing company; Jackson hoped that control of Marvel could help him bring the web-slinging hero to the screen with himself in the lead.
That made Spider-Man more than a business asset. The character was one of Marvel’s most recognizable creations, and a film could give Jackson a starring role while drawing on a story and audience already familiar to millions of readers.
Owning Marvel would not settle everything
Buying the comic-book publisher, however, would not automatically guarantee that Jackson could make any Spider-Man film he wanted. A character’s publishing rights and the rights to adapt that character for movies can be controlled or licensed separately. A would-be owner would still have to deal with those arrangements, as well as the practical work of developing and producing a film.
So the striking part of the story is the scale of Jackson’s ambition: he reportedly considered acquiring an entire comics empire to pursue one unusually specific casting dream.**
