The golden idol of Hollywood has an incredibly fascinating origin. In 1928, MGM art director Cedric Gibbons was tasked with designing the Academy Award trophy. He reportedly used Mexican actor and filmmaker Emilio Fernández as a completely naked life model, forging the iconic image of a knight gripping a crusader's sword while standing on a reel of film.
