A useful weight with an unusual shape
A paperweight works by pressing loose sheets against a desk so drafts or passing air cannot scatter them. A solid glass sphere could do that job while leaving much of the page visible—a practical advantage over a broad, opaque object. Its rounded shape was less secure than a flat-bottomed weight, though: it could roll if bumped, so it worked best when left undisturbed.
From desk object to symbol
The sphere’s appearance offered a different kind of appeal. Clear glass catches light and reflects the room; viewed closely, its curved surface can make reflections and distortions seem especially vivid. Those qualities made a glass ball visually suggestive beyond its everyday use, helping it fit naturally into fortune-telling imagery.
The shift is a reminder that an object’s meaning can change without its physical form changing at all. A sphere that once kept papers in place could later serve as a prop associated with looking for hidden knowledge—its weight useful on a desk, its reflective surface useful to the imagination.
