Capitalism is supposed to be all about supply and demand, unless you happen to be a registered nurse living in an isolated Midwestern county. When a single massive hospital network is the only game in town, it creates a labor monopsony—a market with only one buyer. These rural healthcare conglomerates have zero incentive to offer competitive wages because they know their specialized workforce literally has nowhere else to sell their labor without packing up their entire lives and moving.
