A calculated point, not a planet
The Part of Fortune is a point marked on an astrological chart, not a physical object in the sky. It is calculated from the chart’s Ascendant—the sign rising on the eastern horizon—and the positions of the Sun and Moon. Traditional astrology uses one arrangement of those positions for a birth during the day and reverses the Sun–Moon relationship for a birth at night.
Because its location depends on the chart’s geometry, the point can shift when the birth time changes. Astrologers therefore treat it as part of a chart’s symbolic pattern rather than as an independently acting body.
What “fortune” means in the interpretation
Astrologers associate the point with luck, prosperity, and conditions that help a person flourish. “Arbitrary luck” captures the idea that some advantages arrive through circumstance—an opening, a helpful setting, or resources a person did not create alone. It does not mean the chart identifies a guaranteed windfall or predicts a specific event.
The point’s sign and house, the chart sector where it falls, are used to refine that reading. In practice, the interpretation is less a promise of money than a symbolic account of where ease or opportunity may be found. Its appeal lies in giving chance a place in the chart without treating chance as a planet or a certainty.
