Before the slower microgroove formats, getting decent sound quality meant making the disc spin terrifyingly fast. At 78 RPM, a standard 10-inch shellac record held a pathetic three minutes of audio per side. If you wanted to listen to a full symphony, you basically had to treat your phonograph like a frantic, high-speed disc jockey.
