Before Ganon Became a Legend
In A Link to the Past, “Ganon” is not presented simply as the name of a monster who has always existed. The game’s manual gives him a human identity: Ganondorf Dragmire, a leader of thieves whose search for the Triforce leads him into the Sacred Realm, a hidden world connected to Hyrule. There, his encounter with the sacred relic changes the scale of the threat he poses.
That backstory makes the two names do different work. “Ganondorf Dragmire” belongs to a person with a place in the world; “Ganon” is the name attached to the overwhelming force Hyrule must confront. The manual’s surname, so plain beside the dark fantasy stakes, makes the villain’s history feel oddly close to ordinary life.
A Human Name for a Mythic Threat
The contrast also gives the conflict a before and after. Ganon’s danger is not just that he is powerful: he began as someone who wanted power and pursued it. The Triforce serves as the hinge between those stages, turning a criminal’s ambition into a threat to an entire kingdom.
That small naming detail helps the manual compress a larger origin story into a few lines. The player can meet Ganon as a legendary enemy while knowing that the legend has a human beginning—and that the name behind it is Ganondorf Dragmire.
