Before heavy-duty plastics took over, the toughest luggage you could buy was essentially made of glorified glue and pulp. Vulcanized fiberboard was just multiple layers of paper chemically treated to become rock hard, meaning vintage travelers were effectively packing their clothes inside a very sturdy envelope.
