What “Combust” Means in Astrology
In some astrological traditions, a planet is called combust when it appears close to the Sun in the sky. The term describes an astrological condition, not a physical change: the planet does not heat up, sweat, or lose power as a celestial object. Rather, astrologers interpret its closeness to the Sun as making its influence harder to express independently.
Why the Sun Changes the Interpretation
Astrology assigns the Sun a central, prominent role in a birth chart. When another planet is near it, the Sun’s symbolism is thought to overshadow that planet’s qualities. For example, a planet associated with communication might be read as having its usual themes—such as speaking or reasoning—entangled with the Sun’s concerns, rather than operating clearly on its own.
This is why the belief is often described as a loss of effectiveness. It does not mean the planet becomes meaningless; it means astrologers may interpret its influence as constrained, obscured, or absorbed into the Sun’s stronger presence.
Distance and Visibility
The idea has a visible counterpart: from Earth, a planet near the Sun can be difficult to see in the bright sky. Astrological interpretation turns that apparent obscuring into symbolism. As the planet moves farther from the Sun, it is considered less overwhelmed and more able to express its own qualities. The practical takeaway within this tradition is that a planet’s meaning depends not only on which planet it is, but also on its relationship to the Sun in the chart.
