Why Knuckles Trusts the Wrong Story
Knuckles is not fooled because he has forgotten what he is guarding. His weakness is that the lie speaks directly to his duty: someone is coming for the Master Emerald, and he must stop them. In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Dr. Robotnik uses that fear to turn Knuckles against Sonic, while pursuing the emerald himself.
The trick works by giving Knuckles a simple explanation for a confusing situation. Sonic is a stranger on the island; Robotnik presents him as the threat. Knuckles acts on that account before he has enough evidence to see who benefits from the accusation. The villain does not need Knuckles to be foolish—only protective, suspicious, and quick to respond.
The Lie Creates the Conflict
That setup gives the game a reason for Knuckles to obstruct Sonic without making him a straightforward villain. He is guarding something he genuinely believes is in danger. His punches and traps become obstacles in the adventure, but the real conflict is a contest over what he believes: Robotnik can use Knuckles as a guard while keeping attention away from his own scheme.
The repetition is part of the character’s appeal. Knuckles is powerful and capable, yet his strength does not help him judge a story. Each time the same kind of deception works, the contrast is clear: he can defend the emerald from an attacker, but not from a lie that makes the wrong person look like one.
