Why researchers bought thousands of PlayStations
It is a rare day when a consumer electronics giant accidentally subsidizes supercomputers. When Sony launched the PS3, they heavily subsidized the complex cell processor hardware, losing roughly $240 per console. It was so much cheaper than buying equivalent raw computer parts that military researchers and universities bought thousands of PS3s merely to wire them together into cheap supercomputers.
