A closer look
Beating a game fast is impressive, but hacking a console using only a plastic controller is borderline wizardry. In a glitch category known as Arbitrary Code Execution (ACE), runners exploit a vulnerability in how the game loads memory. By perfectly positioning Link, picking up specific items, and manipulating camera angles, they essentially trick the game into reading their controller joystick movements and button presses as raw programming code. Instead of playing the adventure, they are literally live-coding a new directive into the game's RAM that says, "skip to the final cutscene." The result is a hero who wakes up in his treehouse, does a few bizarre backflips in the forest, and instantly saves the world while the actual final boss remains thoroughly unbothered in his castle.
