Rockets simply can't carry enough heavy fuel to reach the outer solar system. Instead, scientists perform interplanetary theft. By flying a probe dangerously close to a massive planet like Jupiter, they siphon off a tiny fraction of the planet's orbital energy. This permanently slows Jupiter down by roughly one foot per trillion years, while simultaneously launching the probe forward like an absolutely unhinged cosmic rubber band.
