Nothing inspires total spiritual liberation quite like dodging the colonial authorities. Before he was a globally revered mystic, Sri Aurobindo was a fierce Indian nationalist actively organizing rebellions against the British Empire. After being thrown into solitary confinement for a year (where he claimed he had profound visions of Krishna), he fled to the French colony of Pondicherry to escape re-arrest. There, safely out of British jurisdiction, he sat down and invented 'Integral Yoga,' perfectly blending political exile with enlightenment.
