A Lemon as a Ritual Stand-In
In this cleansing practice, the lemon serves as a temporary stand-in for a person’s troubles. The practitioner moves it around the body as though it can gather what feels heavy or harmful. Within the ritual’s spiritual framework, the aura is an invisible field around a person, and “negative energy” describes an unwanted influence believed to affect that field. These are matters of belief, not energies that the lemon can be shown to absorb scientifically.
Why the Fruit Is Discarded
The disposal completes the gesture. Once the lemon has been treated as the carrier of unwanted influence, throwing it away marks a separation: the burden is no longer being held close to the person. That visible ending can make an abstract concern feel manageable, much as a symbolic act can help someone express a wish to let go.
The lemon’s role is therefore less about a measurable change in the body than about giving the cleansing a concrete sequence—move the fruit, assign it a burden, then remove it. The final act is what makes the ritual feel finished.
