When fluoride was first introduced to municipal water supplies to dramatically reduce cavities, organized dentistry panicked. A whole lot of their bread and butter relied on the fact that human teeth were constantly rotting out of people's skulls. Eventually they pivoted to cosmetic whitening and Invisalign, but for a hot minute, preventing decay was viewed as a horrific business threat.
