The founding fathers hated taxes so much they nearly tore apart the country over a stiff drink. In 1791, the US imposed a tax on distilled spirits. Frontier farmers, who used whiskey as an actual currency, rebelled violently. Washington himself owned a massive distillery at Mount Vernon, yet he hypocritically had to lead an army of 13,000 militia to violently crush the tax evasion.
