In what is arguably the worst savings plan in history, ancient Celtic tribes intentionally threw massive hordes of precious metal coins straight into muddy swamps as offerings. Rather than circulating the value to build roads or armies, they essentially permanently destroyed their own purchasing power purely to keep the local swamp deities happy.
