Wall Street got its name from a real wall
The epicenter of global finance originated as a panicked defense mechanism against colonial rivals. In the 17th century, Dutch settlers in New Amsterdam built a 12-foot wooden palisade to protect themselves from the British and Native Americans. The wall was eventually dismantled, but the dirt path running alongside it kept the name. Today, it serves as a metaphorical wall keeping the middle class out of wealth.
