When a Holy Reputation Met a Physical Reaction

Accounts of revered figures surrounded by a smell of decay place two kinds of response side by side: followers’ respect and the body’s involuntary recoil. A person can choose to remain near someone out of devotion, but a smell associated with rotting flesh can provoke gagging and make a crowd retreat. The story’s force comes from that clash, not from reverence making the odor pleasant.

The Stench as Part of the Story

Such reports should be read as claims preserved in religious or mystical storytelling, not as proof of a supernatural cause. The account may leave the odor unexplained; its vividness alone makes the figure seem physically overwhelming, while the crowd’s flight gives that power a visible consequence.

That detail also makes the story hard to reduce to an idealized portrait of holiness. The revered person is remembered not only through belief, but through an experience imagined as intensely bodily—and unpleasant enough to drive admirers away.
