When the ampersand was part of the alphabet
HERE’S THE INTERESTING PART
Reciting the alphabet used to end with a confusing linguistic flourish. Schoolchildren would finish with 'X, Y, Z, and per se and', which eventually slurred together into a completely new word. This elegant little squabble of ink lost its official alphabetical status over time, being demoted to a mere logistical symbol for connecting thoughts.
