A closer look
Paradox of thrift is a popular macroeconomic concept popularized by John Maynard Keynes which states that if everyone in an economy acts responsibly and saves their money during a recession, the entire economy will aggressively crash. Because your personal spending is someone else's direct income, mass frugality causes corporate profits to plummet, which leads to massive layoffs, which ironically leaves everyone with significantly less money to save. The system literally demands that we blindly consume vast amounts of unnecessary goods at all times, functioning like a shark that will immediately suffocate and die the second it stops moving forward. The moment the general public decides to stop buying plastic junk they do not need, the entire global financial structure begins to collapse, proving our societal stability is completely reliant on perpetual, unchecked financial irresponsibility
