Sony's Betamax video cassette format was widely considered by tech experts to be vastly superior to JVC's VHS format in terms of actual picture quality, resolution, and audio fidelity during the legendary home video format wars of the late 1970s and 1980s. However, VHS ultimately achieved total global dominance because the tapes were significantly cheaper to produce and could record up to three hours of footage, proving once and for all that the average consumer absolutely does not care about high-end technological excellence or artistic integrity if the alternative means they can cheaply record an entire football game or multiple episodes of a soap opera without having to get off the couch to change the tape
