In a beautiful display of Canadian politeness and economic absurdity, Canadian Tire stores issued so much colorful loyalty paper money that it became a de facto currency. People used it to tip waitstaff, buy items at local flea markets, and even pay off minor debts. In 2011, a man was actually arrested in Germany for carrying counterfeit Canadian Tire money. You can’t make this up.
