Davy discovered sodium by electrifying strong lye

Humphry Davy was apparently obsessed with passing electric currents through highly caustic substances to see what would happen. By melting down lye and hitting it with severe voltage, he produced tiny metallic globules that immediately burst into flames. It was a brilliant, albeit terrifying, way to introduce raw sodium to the scientific world.
