A closer look
Long before producers could just click a button on a MacBook to get a synth wave, the most mind-bending sci-fi intro ever was crafted entirely by hand. Delia Derbyshire of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop created every single swooping note by cutting strips of magnetic tape with a razor blade and sticking them back together to form continuous loops. It took weeks of manual labor to produce 2 minutes of spooky space noises.
