In 1968, the Zond 5 spacecraft successfully orbited the moon and safely returned to Earth. Its entirely unconsenting crew consisted of wine flies, some mealworms, and two Russian steppe tortoises, making them the first earthly creatures to ever circle our lunar neighbor.
