Why roulette calls its ball a “pill”

The name comes from the ball’s shape: a small, smooth capsule-like piece that can roll freely around the wheel. In casino language, “pill” means the roulette ball, not a special kind of bet or a part of the wheel.

A tiny object with a precise job

The dealer sends the ball around the outer track while the numbered wheel turns beneath it in the opposite direction. As the ball loses speed, it drops from the track and bounces across the wheel’s pockets and dividers before settling into one numbered slot. Its small size and rounded surface let it travel quickly, then scatter unpredictably as it falls.

That final bounce is why the ball’s path can look erratic even when the wheel is spinning smoothly. The “pill” is both the game’s moving marker and the object that turns a spinning wheel into a result: wherever it comes to rest determines the winning number.
