Maintainers of the National Debt Clock in New York City literally ran out of digital real estate when the United States government debt surpassed ten trillion dollars. They were forced to hastily drop the dollar sign on the display just to physically fit the newly minted fourteenth digit onto the electronic billboard. It perfectly encapsulates the abstract comedy of modern macroeconomic policy, where sovereign debt grows at such a rapid velocity that physical architecture cannot even keep up with the government's spectacular borrowing habits
