A closer look

Polybius is a famous urban legend about an arcade game supposedly deployed by the US government in 1981 to secretly brainwash citizens and harvest psychological data. According to the completely fabricated myth, the mysterious black cabinets induced amnesia, night terrors, and suicidal tendencies in players, while mysterious men in black suits would periodically collect the data instead of coins. In reality, the legend was born from a cocktail of early internet paranoia, actual FBI raids on arcades for illegal gambling, and isolated incidents of teenagers having epileptic seizures from intense flashing lights in games like Tempest. Even though it is entirely fake, the myth persists because deeply cynical gamers genuinely believe that the government would use a low-resolution maze game to achieve mind control, rather than just waiting for social media to do the exact same thing voluntarily three decades later
