When an onion became an oracle
Cromnyomancy is a form of divination—seeking guidance through signs—in which onions stand in for competing choices. Each option is carved into an onion, and the first one to sprout is treated as the answer. Rather than asking a person to interpret a complicated omen, the ritual sets up a simple contest: one bulb will show new growth before the others.
A living sign, not a guaranteed test
An onion can begin growing from the stored energy inside its bulb, sending out a shoot even without being planted in soil. Which bulb sprouts first can depend on its condition and the way it has been stored, so the result is not a controlled way to compare the choices themselves. The ritual’s force lies instead in giving an uncertain decision a visible outcome—and a rule for acting on it.
That rule can make a hard choice feel less open-ended: once a shoot appears, the waiting is over and one option has been selected. The memorable twist is that the “answer” comes not from a deliberate human judgment but from a small, ordinary change in a living bulb.
