The most famous backpacker guide empire was built by two broke people stapling paper together. Lonely Planet was founded by Tony and Maureen Wheeler in 1973 after they drove a cheap minivan completely across Eurasia. Realizing people desperately wanted to know how to wander the globe on pennies, they wrote a booklet literally titled 'Across Asia on the Cheap', cementing the era of budget vagabonding.
