Before photography became portable, showing off your vacation required actual artistic talent. The very first known picture postcard was sent in 1840 by an eccentric writer named Theodore Hook, who hand-painted a caricature of postal workers onto the card before mailing it to himself. He basically invented the concept of sending vacation photos purely to troll the postal service.
