When a decision is handed to the onions

Cromniomancy is a form of divination that uses onions as signs. Its appeal lies in turning an abstract choice into something visible: instead of weighing possibilities only in one’s mind, a person gives each option a physical marker and watches for a sign. The ritual treats the result as guidance, not as a calculation of which option is objectively best.

That can make a difficult choice feel more manageable. Waiting for a sign creates a pause, and the eventual result offers a story for moving forward. In that sense, the practice resembles other forms of divination in which ordinary objects are assigned meanings within a particular ritual.

What a sprout can—and cannot—tell you

An onion sprouts when conditions allow it to begin growing. Differences in its condition or surroundings can affect which one sprouts first, so the sequence reflects natural variation as well as the ritual’s interpretation. Cromniomancy gives that sequence personal meaning; it does not establish that an onion can know what will happen if someone takes a particular path.

The distinction is part of what makes the custom worth understanding: the sprout is a physical event, while its role as advice comes from the meaning people attach to it. A household decision becomes a small ceremony, with a living onion marking the moment when someone is ready to choose.
