Reading a living sign
Ichthyomancy is a form of divination: a practice that treats an observed sign as meaningful when seeking guidance about the future. In this case, the sign is not a fixed image or written symbol but a fish’s movement. The observer watches what the fish does and interprets that behavior within a symbolic scheme.
That makes the reading depend on attention and context. A turn, pause, or repeated path can become significant because the practice asks the observer to connect visible movement with an unseen outcome. Different interpretations are possible; the fish’s behavior does not carry one universally agreed meaning.
Why a circle can mean good fortune
In one interpretation, a goldfish swimming in circles is taken as a favorable omen. The circle supplies the pattern, and the divinatory tradition supplies its meaning: the movement is read as a sign of good fortune rather than as random activity.
This is a symbolic way of making uncertainty feel legible, not a scientifically established forecast. Its interest lies in the interpretive step—the same small movement can become a message when someone approaches it with a system of meaning. A fish completing another loop may therefore matter less as a prediction than as a prompt to hope for what comes next.
