Apantomancy is a form of divination that reads meaning into an unexpected encounter—often with an animal. The animal is not chosen in advance; its appearance is treated as a sign arriving by chance. In that framework, spotting an animal can be taken as good fortune, while different species may suggest different meanings.
Why the Same Sighting Can Mean Different Things
An omen depends on interpretation, not just on which animal appears. A squirrel and a deer might carry distinct associations, and the person’s circumstances or the tradition they draw on can shape how the encounter is read. The chance meeting supplies the prompt; symbolism supplies the message.
