Why Some Zodiac Signs Are Called “Human”

In traditional astrology, signs are sometimes grouped by the kind of figure used to represent them. Gemini’s twins, Virgo’s maiden, Libra’s human-like figure, and Aquarius’s water-bearer are commonly treated as human signs; many other signs are represented by animals or other creatures. These labels belong to astrology’s symbolic vocabulary, not to a biological claim about who can literally speak.

Speech as a Sign of Reason

The human figure traditionally suggests more than a body: it stands for rational thought and deliberate communication. On that symbolic reading, the ability to speak marks a distinction between human signs and signs represented by creatures understood as acting more through instinct. The label therefore links speech with intellect—the capacity to form ideas and express them.

This is a way astrologers have interpreted the imagery, not evidence that zodiac signs determine anyone’s intelligence or speaking ability. Its meaning comes from the contrast built into the symbols: a human figure represents conscious expression, while an animal figure points toward a different set of qualities.
