A point made from three chart positions

The Lot of Fortune—also called the Part of Fortune—is not a planet or a physical object in the sky. It is a calculated point in a birth chart. In a common traditional method, an astrologer combines the positions of the Ascendant (the sign rising on the eastern horizon), the Sun, and the Moon. The calculation reverses the Sun-and-Moon order for charts cast for daytime and nighttime births.

Because it is calculated from those positions, the Lot moves when the birth time or location changes: both affect the Ascendant. Small differences can shift its chart placement, especially near the boundary between signs or houses.

How astrologers read its placement

Traditional astrologers treat the point as a guide to circumstances that support well-being and material ease. They interpret its sign as describing the style of those circumstances and its house—the chart sector where it falls—as indicating an area of life in which they may unfold. Other chart factors are considered alongside it, so the Lot is not usually read as a standalone verdict about wealth.

The idea is less “money will arrive” than “this is where conditions may help a person make use of what they have.” That is why two charts can place the Lot in different areas, while neither placement guarantees a particular income or outcome.
