Why passwords need a secret pepper

Because salt wasn't culinary enough, cryptographers introduced the 'Pepper'. While salt is stored alongside the encrypted data, a pepper is a secret cryptographic value hidden entirely somewhere else on the server. Even if hackers steal the entire database, they still cannot crack the encryption because they lack the deeply hidden spicy variable.
